The magician is famous for his scary stunts and unusual tricks, but this time things did not go according to plan…
David Blaine is no stranger to dicing with death but his latest escapade could have killed him, reports the Daily Mail.
The illusionist performed what is perhaps his riskiest stunt to-date, involving catching a bullet in a mouth guard… In his mouth.
Miraculously, Blaine did successfully “catch” the speeding bullet, however it was at this critical moment that the trick went horribly wrong.
Luckily, the actual act of catching the bullet was indeed a success but scarily, the mouth guard used snapped inside his mouth during the trick, cutting his throat.
Despite the magician being taken to hospital to have his wound treated, he remained adamant he will still perform the stunt later during his upcoming tour.
To prepare, Blaine had practiced by being shot in the chest, as you do… This was apparently to stop himself flinching during the process, as they increased his tolerance levels by firing with bigger and more powerful guns as practice runs progressed.
It’s a very mechanical approach to something. And its related to card magic, because when you’re learning certain things it’s like a mechanical approach – repetition, repetition repetition, until it just becomes second nature.
The dangerous trick has been performed since the mid 1800s and has even resulted in the death of magician, Chung Ling Soo. They tragically died while performing the stunt back in 1918.
In Blaine’s version he held a metal cup in his mouth with a guard protecting his teeth, while having a pretty foreboding looking rifle fired at his face.
Despite his training programme vigilance, the magician admits he had failed to check the resilience of the guard itself.
After David somehow managed to catch the bullet, he revealed that he actually thought for a terrifying moment it was going through the back of his head.
When the bullet struck the cup, there was a high-pitch ringing in my ears, and I felt an impact at the back of my throat. And I was sure that the bullet went right through my head, and that I was dead.
At the end of his astonishing set, his colleague was panicked thinking that he had messed up and nearly killed the star, but David sought to put his mind at rest.
David and his brain survive to trick us all another day…
